The Grove Mall team visited Die Wilgers Hospital to honour nurses on International Nurses Day

Tshwane, 12 May 2025: In a fitting gesture to mark International Nurses Day, The Grove Mall took a moment to turn the spotlight on those whose daily work is often unsung. In a rare role reversal, the mall’s team stepped into the shoes of caregivers by showing genuine care to the nurses of Die Wilgers Hospital.

South Africa’s nurses account for 56% of the country’s healthcare providers, forming the backbone of both public and private medical services. Their work transcends routine clinical care, underpinning the national health system through primary healthcare delivery, emergency response, chronic disease management, and even research and clinical education.

A Tribute To Healthcare’s Quiet Strength

On this special day, 500 carefully curated gift bags were handed directly to the nurses of Die Wilgers Hospital. These thoughtfully assembled tokens included movie tickets from Ster-Kinekor, vouchers from Luggage Company, snacks from Cape Dry, an accessory from Lovisa, a fragrance sample from Edgars Beauty, and a Krispy Kreme treat. Additionally, 50 nurses received vanity cases — a reminder to make time for themselves.

This initiative was more than a goodwill campaign. It was a sincere recognition of frontline workers whose dedication forms the uncelebrated scaffolding of South Africa’s strained healthcare sector.

Voices From The Ward

Julie-Anne Claassen, General Manager of The Grove Mall, expressed heartfelt admiration:

“We wanted to do something that genuinely reflected the admiration we feel for these professionals. Nurses are the quiet strength behind our healthcare system. Visiting Die Wilgers and sharing our thanks face-to-face was a moving experience and a small way to acknowledge their extraordinary impact.”

Ivan Meyer, a senior nursing manager, shared his gratitude:

“What an unexpected treat! It was so special to feel seen and appreciated. I’ll definitely be using my movie ticket on my next day off.”

Celebrating The People Behind The Profession

Far from being a transactional publicity stunt, this was a moment of connection. For a brief few hours, the carers became the cared-for — a symbolic but essential reminder that behind every uniform is a human being deserving of recognition.
