In this suspense-driven thriller based on a mysterious comic-book character, Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey) plays Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic who discovers she has the gift of clairvoyance and the ability to manipulate time.

Forced  to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women with various spider-like abilities, including Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney, star of the hit romantic comedy Anyone But You), who stuns her adversaries into submission with her electroshock psychic spiderwebs.

Directed by SJ Clarkson, Madame Web is a masterclass in visual effects. After Cassandra Webb/Madame Web discovers her connection to the Web of Life, the film pulses with amazing underwater sequences (shot inside giant tanks), with cutting-edge technology used to portray her ability to astral travel out of her body—not to mention the creation of a new spider species!

Madame Web depicts the origin story of one of Marvel’s most compelling mutants. Here are some fun facts about the original comic-book character that inspired the film:

Did you know?

• Madame Web made her Marvel comics debut 44 years ago (in 1980)
• In the comics, she is portrayed as a blind clairvoyant (contrasting sharply with Madame Web, which focuses on her younger years as a paramedic)
• Due to her powers of telepathy and clairvoyance and her ability to astral travel, she can see past, present and future
• Unlike most other Spider-Heroes, who obtained their powers from radioactive spiders and other sources, Madame Web is a mutant who was born with her abilities

By focusing on the origin story of this mysterious psychic, Madame Web promises to unlock new nuances of the Spider-Verse for all Marvel fans. Don’t miss the latest web-slinging superhero instalment, brought to you by Sony Pictures Entertainment, available to buy or rent on Apple and Google from 2 April 2024 and on DStv Box Office from April 30, 2024.
