KwaZulu-Natal, 9 September 2026: Best friends, big adventures and memories worth holding onto are coming to Gateway Theatre of Shopping this school holiday, with a special Forgotten Island movie activation taking over the centre court on the cinema level, between Toy Kingdom and Nike, from 21 September to 4 October 2026.

From DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind memorable friendships in How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, and The Wild Robot, Forgotten Island follows lifelong best friends Jo and Raissa as they prepare to head down separate paths after graduating from high school. On their last night together, the pair stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nakali, a world filled with magical and mythological creatures from the stories they grew up hearing from their Filipino families.

But their biggest challenge comes when they discover that the memories of their entire friendship are the price they must pay to return home. Jo and Raissa must find a way off the island before they forget each other forever.

Inspired by the new DreamWorks Animation adventure Forgotten Island, releasing in cinemas nationwide on 24 September, the free experience will invite visitors to step into the world of the movie, capture their own Forgotten Island-inspired moments and celebrate the friendships that matter most at Gateway.

Running daily from 11 AM to 6 PM, the activation will coincide with the school holidays and the film’s release at Nu Metro Gateway.

KwaZulu-Natal, 30 March 2026: Gateway Theatre of Shopping is adding energy to the Easter holidays with the launch of the Have a Ball Fun & Fitness Club, a school holiday programme encouraging young people to move, play and connect. Running from Monday 30 March to Sunday 12 April near Sportsman Warehouse (Entrance 8, ground floor), the programme features activities designed to keep young visitors active and trying something new.

From kids’ activities to social sport and wellness-focused experiences, Have a Ball Fun & Fitness Club brings together a mix of movement and light-hearted competition, creating a space where families and friends can spend time in a way that feels easy and rewarding.

Plenty of Ways to Move, Play and Connect

Each day of the Have a Ball programme, instructors from Virgin Active will keep energy levels up from late morning through to the afternoon. Activities begin at 11:00 with a dance session to get everyone moving, followed by an interactive board game from 12:00 to 13:00 that blends play with light movement. From 13:00 to 14:00, boxing sessions introduce a fun, guided workout, before the Grid Squad takes over from 14:00 to 15:00 with team-based challenges that encourage coordination and confidence.

The day winds down with another upbeat dance session from 15:00 to 16:00, giving kids a chance to end on a high.

Padel sessions, led by Virgin Active Padel Club, will give young participants the chance to try something new in a supportive setting daily from 11:00 to 13:00. Plus, for extra fun, activities such as basketball, soccer, arts and crafts will be available between 11 am and 4 pm.

KwaZulu-Natal, 20 October 2025: Gateway Theatre of Shopping will once again shine a spotlight on local change-makers when it hosts the annual Change in Action NPO Fair on Saturday, 25 October 2025. The event, now in its third year, has become a meaningful space for Durban’s non-profits to share their work, connect with partners and engage with the public.

This year, 20 organisations have been selected from more than 200 applications to showcase their projects on the cinema level at Gateway. In the build-up, each group has received training and mentorship through the campaign partners, Nation Builder and the Hollywood Foundation, equipping them with tools that extend beyond the event itself. From 9 am to 9 pm, shoppers will be able to meet the organisations, hear their stories and explore different ways of supporting them. The day will also feature a morning networking brunch, giving business leaders a chance to connect directly with the NPOs.

A Platform For Local Organisations

One of the exhibitors is Lukhozi Youth Foundation from Cato Manor, which focuses on opening doors for young people through education. From career talks with professionals to hands-on work shadowing and guidance with tertiary applications, the organisation works to ensure that no learner misses out on opportunities because of a lack of support.

The KZN Blind and Deaf Society, based in Durban, which has been a pillar of inclusion for many years, will also feature. Through early learning programmes, creative arts, nutrition support and life skills activities, the society helps children with disabilities gain confidence and develop the skills they need to grow and thrive.

From Inanda, the Active Minds Society brings an innovative approach to education and youth development and will showcase their formidable work on the day. Their after-school Fundiseka Education Programme supports learners while also training unemployed youth as facilitators, creating a ripple effect of opportunity. Alongside this, their Active Kids and Active Swimmers initiatives use play and sport to build safe, positive spaces for children.

By hosting Change in Action, Gateway continues to provide a stage for Durban’s non-profits to be seen and heard. The initiative not only highlights the breadth of work being done in local communities but also encourages the public and business community to become part of it.

In line with this year’s national theme, “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” the centre’s campaign this year focuses on nutrition and early development support for some of the province’s most vulnerable children.

Drop & Donate for The Baby Home

Building on Gateway’s previous support of The Baby Home through the 2024 “Change in Action” campaign, until 31 July, shoppers are encouraged to donate baby food items, such as infant formula, purity, cereal, teething biscuits or snack items, for The Baby Home in Durban North, Umhlanga. The “Drop & Donate” collection will be available at the mall’s central Information Desk, and those who prefer may deliver their items directly to the organisation, located at 11 Pigeonwood Close. Each contribution will help ensure that six babies in care receive the nutrition they need during their critical development stage.

Hands-on action on Mandela Day

On Mandela Day itself on 18 July, Gateway invites individuals, businesses and organisations to take part in “Play with Purpose”, a 67-minute activity in honour of Mandela Day in proud association with Nation Builder.

Playdough-making stations will be set up in the Atrium, Parkade B, level PG, Close to Entrance 5, where volunteers can help create colourful, child-safe batches of playdough for local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. Once packaged, the playdough will be delivered to various centres to support both play and learning. This hands-on session allows shoppers to contribute their time in a way that will directly benefit young children and support early learning.
