The ANC’s collision with the Trump Administration has much relevance in terms of the exposure that it has produced and long-term American interests.

Since the ending of white rule, international focus on South Africa declined significantly until the ANC’s inducement by Iran to accuse Israel of genocide in the ICJ. Then, with Trump shaking up the world order and re-examining US trade interests regarding AGOA (African Growth and Opportunities Act), the ANC rule of South Africa has come under the spotlight.

ANC policies on property rights, racial discrimination and its relations with the pariah state of Iran, have once again placed South Africa in the arena of censure. This is ironic because it was the ANC’s campaign against apartheid that placed South Africa there in the 1980s. But then history does have a habit of repeating itself.

Inflaming the situation is the thoroughly deserved expulsion by the US of the ANC’s nominated ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, which has further aggravated US/SA relations. But given the extent to which the AGOA facilitates trade, it is very much in South Africa’s interests to mend fences with the Trump Administration.

Clearly, the first step is to select a new ambassador to the US. To ease acceptance of that representative, it should be someone who is not an ANC member. Choosing a candidate from the IFP would be sensible because it would be representative of the GNU.

Beyond the spat that the ANC has caused with his administration, it is helpful to consider Trump’s geopolitical strategy. He is well aware that China, as his main opponent, is establishing trade choke points globally: the Silk Road linking Asia and the Middle East, the eastern Pacific, the Panama Canal, cultivating South America, eying mining in Greenland, and investments in Africa.

It is also common knowledge that China seeks to be world dominant—militarily, scientifically and economically—by 2049, the centenary of communist rule.

The Cape Sea route, therefore, cannot be out of Trump’s focus. The Dutch and British appreciated its significance in past centuries. Given China’s strategic interest in the Indian Ocean, the southern tip of Africa has great maritime relevance as a prospective choke point.

Therefore, keeping South Africa within its orbit is part of Trump’s strategy. Using trade and tariffs, his persuasive tools, will no doubt mark that road.

The common thread amongst critics of the Trump Administration is their robust concerns about democracy and governance. Yet for four years they were silent about the Biden regime’s violations of those concerns.

First amendment violations of freedom of expression and religion, weaponisation of the justice system to persecute and prosecute political opponents as ‘domestic terrorists,’ the invasion by millions of illegal aliens and drug cartels, Biden’s illegal receipt of funds from China, electoral fraud – none of those criminal violations of governance and democracy attracted condemnation by the pro-Biden lobby.

But now that Trump is returning justice to America by rooting out those elements that subverted it, he is accused of threatening constitutional principles. The American Bar Association’s outcry in defence of the law firm Perkins, Coie shows how corrupt the practice of law has become in America. Hillary Clinton and the Democrat Party paid $1 million to Perkins, Coie to manufacture the Steele dossier which claimed Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election.

A court has already sanctioned Perkins, Coie for unethical conduct for undermining democracy. Trump’s pursuit of Perkins, Coie for its role in character assassination and destabilisation of his first Administration is fully justified. He has banned Perkins, Coie staff from all Federal buildings. In addition, no contract with his Administration will be granted if a contractor has business dealings with Perkins, Coie.

In contrast with the globalist elites of the EU, WEF and UN that seek confrontation and a world war, Trump’s mission is to promote peace. Significantly, his critics are silent about how since January 20, China’s threat to invade Taiwan has abated, the North Korean ‘rocket man’ despot has gone quiet, Putin is ready to negotiate an end to war in Ukraine.

Turning around the wasteful and costly state of the economy Trump inherited from Biden will take about six months. But the building blocks are being placed. Apple is investing $500 billion in America. Taiwanese semi-conductor electronics company TSMC is investing $100 billion in Arizona. Oil and gas production is set to boom and generate new employment opportunities.

The Republican Party is now the party of American workers. As corruption and waste is rooted out by Musk’s Dept of Government Efficiency, savings of billions will lower taxes and living costs.

In campaigning for the White House, Trump made his policy intentions clear. The Democrats, however, promised more of their subversive, globalist, woke programmes. Now, rudderless and leaderless, all they offer is hate and bitterness. Thus, Trumpism as liberal commentator Bill Maher has stated, is simply a response to the insanity of the Left.

There is no credibility in Mushtak Parker’s lengthy harangue claiming Trump’s war on diversity impacts negatively on the employment of women (The Mercury, March 10).

No part of Trump’s Executive Order cancelling DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) discriminates against women because merit is the sole criterion Trump is enshrining. Parker’s blind spot, therefore, is that by obsessing about diversity, he ignores merit. In fact, nowhere in his article does he even mention the word.

Based purely on merit, women are very well represented in the top ranks of Trump’s Administration. Here they are: Susi Wiles – Chief of Staff; Pam Bondi – Attorney-General; Kristi Noem – Dept of Homeland Security; Elize Stephanik – Ambassador to the UN; Brooke Rollins – Secretary of Agriculture; Tulsi Gabbard – Head of National Intelligence; Lori Chavez De Remer –Labour Secretary; Linda McMahon – Education Secretary; Kelly Loeffler – Small Business Administrator; Kari Lake – Head of the Voice of America; Karoline Leavitt – Press Secretary; Alina Habba – Legal Counsel to the President.

Parker’s other mistake is that he confuses equality with equity. Equality means giving all genders equal treatment in terms of rights and opportunities. In other words, merit is not premised on gender. The best person for the job gets it based on merit, not gender.

Equity is a social engineering tool that seeks to populate posts based on representivity that has nothing to do with merit. On that basis, it favours allocating posts to those who otherwise would not qualify for a position. It discounts the barriers that would otherwise prevent a person from obtaining a position. Equity involves a learning process which, over time, may enable that person to succeed in the position in which he/she has been elevated.

All job placements have risks. However, whereas the risk factor of failure is considerable regarding equity postings, that is not the case where employment has been allocated based on merit. When all is said and done, there is no substitute for merit.

The Mercury’s editorial suggestion (March 10) that the government embark on a narrative to counter “lies” about South Africa by highlighting its achievements is a non-starter because transparency defies the projection of a positive narrative.

Citing the legacy of Nelson Mandela as a beacon of hope and reconciliation is rhetoric which is not reflected in the ANC’s intended National Democratic Revolution. As long as the intention of the Marxist so-called Freedom Charter concerning state ownership of all land, resources, industry and banks is being pursued piecemeal and by sleight of hand, it is fake news to proclaim that all is well.

Awareness of what the ANC has not achieved is widespread thanks to the information highway called the internet. Once a leading world airline, SAA is bankrupt. Once the supplier of the cheapest electricity, Eskom is bankrupt and unable to supply power consistently. Once having the most efficient and extensive rail network, today it is largely in ruins.

Instead, South Africa leads in having the highest unemployment rate in the world and being among the worst in terms of crime, rape and murder. The majority of its municipalities are bankrupt and unable to deliver basic services consistently.

If all were rosy, then we would not have 142 racially discriminatory laws and regulations. We would not have almost zero economic growth. We would not have demagogues like Malema vowing to murder whites and destroy food-producing farms. We would not have corruption and lawlessness, which extends from the presidency down to the local police station.

In 30 years, the ANC has reduced South Africa to a failed state status. Time to acknowledge that is way overdue. Trying to divert attention from this glaring failure fools nobody. Some tough medicine from the Trump Administration is what is needed to liberate South Africa from the ANC.

It is regrettable that The Mercury (March 5) embraces the ANC’s narrative that the actions of AfriForum and Solidariteit are harming the country’s image by disseminating misinformation about non-racialism.

What is misinformation is that race-based laws ended in 1994. AfriForum and Solidariteit’s mission to the US was not only to correct that perception but to quantify the extent to which racial demographics are applied in every which way—142 regulatory instances, as research has revealed.

For too long that reality has been ignored as world opinion continued to regard the ANC as worthy stewards of what is seen as post-apartheid South Africa. But that image has now come under scrutiny since the Trump Administration, rightly, is checking on the requirements to qualify for membership of AGOA (African Growth and Opportunities Act).

Even the World Bank has urged the ANC to scale back on regulations which hamper investment and economic growth because of the percentages demanded by BEE legislation.

So, it is very unfortunate and downright nonsense to assert that AfriForum and Solidariteit are ignoring the injustices of the past and the social challenges confronting the country.

What has to be faced is that race-based legislation and regulation has not engineered prosperity. Whilst a fraction of the previously disadvantaged has benefited handsomely through BEE, those benefits have not trickled down to the masses. The reality is that South Africa is much poorer. Eighteen million on social grants is indicative of that. Unemployment of between 35 and 40% is a terrible blot on the ANC’s record.

In that the welfare of the majority is highly dependent on the security of the minorities, it is logical that the strictures of race-based laws be removed or at least relaxed in order to incentivise investment, which will promote growth and employment.

That is what AfriForum and Solidariteit are seeking to bring to international attention. To claim that they are promoting interference in South Africa’s sovereignty is a bit rich when that is what the ANC promoted in the 1980s. Bringing pressure to bear on the government is a valid and democratic right.

Twenty years ago, Tony Leon called for sunset clauses to be applied to race-based legislation. Failure to do so is what is impoverishing South Africa.

Apart from his extravagant claims about the GNU, considering the credible analysis Visvin Reddy provides of what’s wrong with South Africa (The Mercury, February 27), it is obvious that his membership in the MK Party is misplaced.

Calling for the country to embrace “a path of stability and prosperity” is, of course, a common-sense outlook. But it is a path that cannot emanate from the MK Party. Reddy’s appeal to avoid “irreparable damage” unless a decisive change is made in the direction the country is headed is ironic because the policies of the MK Party ensure “irreparable damage to the fabric of our society.”

The state of the country is precisely because of the same socialist policies the MK Party promotes, except that it would replace the constitution with the Marxist Freedom Charter. An MKP regime would accelerate the country’s downward trajectory into a socialist paradise by declaring state ownership of all property and resources while severely marginalising free speech and intimidating opposition into submission.

The net result of an MKP regime would be a flight of capital, accelerated emigration of skills, accelerated poverty, and unemployment. That is what socialist states produce, Cuba and Venezuela being current examples.

The fundamental flaws of DEI are premised on two immutable facts of life: gender and inequality, which is why the argument by DEI promoter Siyanda Magayana of Free State University (The Mercury, February 25) is nonsense.

The existence of two genders throughout creation is normal, standard, and institutionalised. But nowhere in creation is there equality. Nature knows no equality. Inequality is a fact of life, evident from birth to death.

Insisting, as Magayana does, that those who differ in some or other way should now be regarded as a separate but equal species is not going to fly. The reason is a simple reality: merit. It does not exclude disability or diversity. The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, is confined to a wheelchair. He was elected as Governor based on merit.

The marginalised rightly expect merit from those who may administer medical, legal, or some other service to them. They would not appreciate that their doctor or pilot held his post merely on the basis of DEI.

Magayana and her ilk double down on prejudice shown towards DEI. But has it occurred to her that to prioritise DEI in the allocation of posts or positions constitutes prejudice against someone of merit, experience or skill?

US Chief Justice John Roberts, back in 2007, produced the answer to racial discrimination. He said, “The way to end racial discrimination is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

The way to end this nonsense about DEI is to stop discriminating on the basis of DEI and accept that there is no substitute for merit, irrespective of gender, race, religion, or disability.

An unprecedented shift in controlling the US news narrative is occurring. Whereas the legacy media, in its self-ordained role as a quasi-government, led the charge in prosecuting Nixon during Watergate and in consistently promoting Democrat narratives, since January 20 it has not only lost that impetus but has had it upended by Trump’s blizzard of reforms.

In his first month in office, Trump issued 73 Executive Orders, 23 Proclamations and 12 Memorandums – more than any recent president issued in their first 100 days. The most significant theme of Trump’s reforms is his exposure of the existence of the Deep State, the entrenched empire of unelected officials within the bureaucracy of government.

Routinely disparaged and dismissed by the legacy media as a “conspiracy theory,” the reality of the Deep State is now undeniable. Its subversive role and the implications for those involved is now the narrative over which the legacy media has no control.

For decades it enjoyed credibility. The words of Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Ted Koppel, Harry Reasoner, Ben Bradlee, and their successors were the holy writ of news and views. But in one month that façade has been stripped away.

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has found that Reuters received $9 million from US taxpayers to promote a programme of Social Engineering and Psychological Operations against US citizens. Left-wing publication Politico received $8 million to disseminate globalist, anti-Trump narratives. Disney’s receipt of USAID to project wokeism and transgenderism was concealed in the form of 700,000 ‘subscriptions.’ The New York Times played the role of “narrative coordination” for the rest of the mass media to disseminate.

Haemorrhaging viewership and readership, the role of the legacy media in censoring and attempting to sustain narratives is beyond salvage as the revelations of Deep State fraud and waste have further implications for those involved. The loud protests of the Democrats against the audits by DOGE serve as an indication of the extent of their collusion. It also reflects their desperation to preserve the US government as the fiefdom of globalist ideology.

The new narrative is now right versus wrong, not Left versus Right. It is now “We the people” and no longer the unelected special interests.

With savings of $55 billion already identified and the decision to mail rebate cheques for $5,000 to 79 million taxpaying households, the popularity of the DOGE shows that the negativity of the Democrats and the legacy media is on the wrong side of the history-making new narrative.

As exemplified in the US by the Democrats, the significance of those who loudly claim democracy is being threatened are the ones who have the most to lose by exposure of their agendas and their actions. ANC councillor Madlala’s claim that Afriforum poses a threat to democracy is a case in point (The Mercury, February 18).

Criticism of minorities in South Africa needs to be factored in terms of the following reality (which came out of my pen some years ago): “the welfare of the majority depends on the security of the minorities.” The welfare plight of Zimbabweans is a direct result of politics that ignored that reality.

So there is nothing wrong with Afriforum prioritising the interests of white people, a corollary of which benefits black people. How does Madlala square that with the existence of lawyer and accounting groups exclusively for blacks? And what about BEE, which, as we all know, has become black elite empowerment?

Citing statistics of land ownership without considering geographical factors is deliberately emotive. What those bald stats do not disclose is that 55% of the freehold farmland which covers 50% of the country is dry, scrub land suitable only for limited livestock grazing.

What Madlala ignores in his bid to promote emotionalism, is that 24% of all farmland has already been redistributed or that land rights have been restored. That is close to the 30% target which the ANC government set by 2030.

Also ignored by Madlala is that the vast majority of farms acquired, which were once productive, have ceased to be commercially viable and food security has not benefited.

Racial quota politics benefits only the political bigots who promote it. Yet those same people prioritise merit in how they are treated and what they pay for – not mediocrity. The ANC’s tired promotion of identity politics has little to do with redress because it is a new form of oppression to sustain its political fortunes.

Madlala’s horror at the prospect of foreign intervention is also short on context. During the 1980s the ANC stridently promoted global foreign intervention in South Africa. The sanctions and disinvestment it encouraged caused mass unemployment and suffering. In terms of the ANC’s cosy relationship with China, foreign exploitation of South Africa is openly taking place. Check the growing Chinese footprint in commerce and ownership of resources.

What goes around comes around. Trump’s economic pressure on the ANC is a taste of what it promoted 40 years ago. Enjoy!

Few people understood President Trump’s reference during his inaugural address to bringing about “a golden age.” But in less than a month the meaning of that reference is becoming clearly apparent.

Virtuous revolutions are those that occur as a result of the will of the people. On the cusp of the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence, Trump is leading a return to America’s roots based on the will of the people as expressed on November 5, 2024.

Trumpism is a response to globalism which seeks to subvert national sovereignty and the values on which Western civilisation was built – individual liberty, religious freedom and respect for tradition and heritage.

Last week Europe had a taste of Trumpism when Vice President JD Vance addressed a gathering of Europe’s elites in Munich. Unpacking his theme of ‘shared values,’ Vance severely upbraided the elites for “Soviet-era” treatment of their fellow citizens by censoring and criminalising freedom of speech.

“The threat I worry about most regarding Europe is not Russia or China….it is a threat from within; the retreat of Europe from its most fundamental values, values shared with the US,” declared Vance.

He put Europe on notice that America’s new agenda was one that listens to citizens, protects their rights and promotes Western Civilisation over Orwellian globalism. The US would not stay silent when European elites sought to silence opposition and to subvert election outcomes the likes of which occurred recently in Romania.

Thus, the essence of Trumpism is the reassertion of moral leadership on the world stage by rejecting undemocratic globalism and those, like the ANC which spurn the ‘shared values’ to which Vance referred while accepting US aid and trade benefits.

If BRICS was the brotherhood it claims to be, it would have rushed to guarantee aid to South Africa following its loss of US aid. Instead, BRICS key members are silent. Indeed, it is likely that BRICS becomes an early casualty of Trumpism. Two BRICS countries likely to align with Trump are Russia and India because of shared interests. That would reduce BRICS to socialist-ruled Brazil under Lula, China and the ANC.

As China proceeds to establish strategic trade choke points – the Red Sea, the ‘Silk’ Road to the Middle East, the eastern Pacific while cultivating South America, Panama and seeking a foothold in Greenland – the Cape sea route once again becomes strategically significant as the gateway to the Indian Ocean.

Trumpism is reconfiguring international relations. That means testing times ahead for the ANC’s relations with China.
