Survivors, first responders, and witnesses reunite with people whose actions changed their lives 25 years ago

Johannesburg, 18 August 2026: National Geographic’s new three-part docuseries 9/11 Reunited will premiere on National Geographic (DStv 181, StarTimes 220), on Tuesday 25 August at 20:30, with a triple bill of three episodes airing back-to-back. The series will also be available on Disney+ in South Africa.

Created in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and from the Emmy ® Award-winning team at 72 Films, the series revisits the deadliest terrorist attacks in U.S. history through the extraordinary human connections formed amid the chaos, courage, and heartbreak of that day. Across the episodes, survivors, first responders, and witnesses reunite with the strangers, rescuers, and everyday heroes who changed, and in many cases saved, their lives on September 11. Many of these emotional reunions take place for the first time in 25 years, providing a rare opportunity to ask long-held questions, express gratitude, and reflect on how those moments have stayed with them for decades.

9/11 Reunited is executive produced by David Glover and Mark Raphael of 72 Films, along with Academy Award ® winners Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin. Louis Lee Ray produces, and Julian Jones directs the series for 72 Films. For National Geographic, Cate Hall and Carolyn Payne serve as executive producers.

Extending the storytelling beyond the docuseries, National Geographic will debut a groundbreaking digital experience in early September featuring an expansive video archive of never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews, and original source material drawn from its acclaimed catalog of 9/11 documentaries. Available on NatGeo.com, the searchable archive invites audiences to explore eyewitness testimony and the lasting aftermath of September 11 through an immersive, multi-perspective experience that brings together firsthand accounts and historical context. Complementing the interactive archive, National Geographic will also publish a companion digital feature by 9/11 historian Garrett M. Graff examining the pivotal 17 minutes between the first and second plane impacts at the World Trade Center. Through a detailed, minute-by-minute narrative, the feature provides additional context and insight, enriching the broader interactive experience.

Rounding out the digital experience, National Geographic, in conjunction with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, will publish an original reportage on the annual “Tribute in Light” public art installation on September 11. The feature will include exclusive photography of this year’s installation by renowned architectural photographer Christopher Payne.

National Geographic Confirms July Premiere For New Series

Reuniting Hiddleston and ‘Loki’ Executive Producer Kevin R. Wright, the Three-Part Event Series From Plimsoll Productions Premieres on Sunday 26 July 2026

Johannesburg, 14 July 2026:National Geographic has released the official trailer and confirmed the premiere date for Pompeii: Out of Time With Tom Hiddleston. The three-part docudrama debuts on Sunday, 26 July, on National Geographic (DStv 181, StarTimes 220), with all three episodes airing consecutively before becoming available on Disney+ in South Africa.

(National Geographic/Paolo Verzone)

Host and “Loki” star Tom Hiddleston and “Loki” executive producer Kevin R. Wright reunite for the series, a fusion of cinematic scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling that transports audiences to ancient Rome in the hours before and during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Guided by a team of archaeologists, historians, geologists and disaster experts, he uncovers remarkable evidence – and the stories of real people that challenge long-held assumptions about Pompeii and its final hours – not least revealing that many of those caught up in the disaster had the chance to survive.

With a twist of his hand, Golden Globe® and Olivier-winning Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”) journeys back in time, stepping into cinematic, scripted sequences that follow the lives of real Romans caught in Vesuvius’ path.

Following a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard, he pieces together how each confronted impossible choices as disaster loomed. As the volcano awakens and the countdown to catastrophe begins, the evidence converges in a gripping race against time to uncover who survived, who perished, and what determined their fate.

“The ancient world has compelled my imagination and curiosity for as long as I can remember: I’ve been fascinated by it all my life,” said Hiddleston. “Classical Antiquity is the foundation and cornerstone of Western and European culture. To visit Pompeii is to feel the distance of the 2,000 years between now and then compressed. The past becomes the present; the past feels so close. Tangible, honest and real. Our relationship with the past is alive – studying who we were in order to understand who we are. Pompeii is a gateway for that conversation. It’s a privilege to host this visually immersive and dynamic series. Pompeii is often remembered for how its story ended. But by looking closer, we can uncover the details of people’s lives, the choices they made, and the moments that came before the city was buried. To revisit the final hours of those ordinary people, caught in an extraordinary moment, and to help bring these remarkable human stories back into the light, is a genuine honor.”

Bringing a bold cinematic vision shaped by his work on Marvel’s critically acclaimed “Loki,” executive producer Kevin R. Wright helps reimagine how history is presented on screen for modern audiences. Blending cutting-edge archaeological discoveries, expert analysis and deeply personal storytelling, the series reframes Pompeii not as a story of destruction but as a human drama of resilience, sacrifice and survival, revealing the lives, choices and destinies of those who stood in the shadow of Vesuvius.

“National Geographic has spent more than a century bringing the past to life through groundbreaking discoveries, exploration and world-class storytelling,” said Tom McDonald, EVP of Content, National Geographic. “Working with Tom and Kevin, alongside the team at Plimsoll led by showrunner Tom Barbor-Might, has been a process of inventing an entirely new genre of history programming – one which brings evidence and imagination together in a way which feels distinctive.”

On 21 July, natgeo.com will publish a major story on three Roman cities buried by Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, which will be featured in the August issue of National Geographic magazine. Using AI and advanced DNA analysis, researchers are uncovering new insights into ancient Roman life: class and gender dynamics at Oplontis, previously unreadable lost writings from Herculaneum’s carbonized scrolls, and diet and disease from a Pompeii latrine. The findings reveal a society surprisingly preoccupied with inequality, health and the pursuit of a fulfilling life.

Disney+ Adds March Madness to Its Live Sports Coverage in Europe and South Africa

Beginning 17 March through 7 April, customers can enjoy 134 NCAA men’s and women’s tournament games live as part of their Disney+ subscription

Games will also stream on Disney+ in the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (11 March 2026): Disney+ today announced the addition of March Madness – the celebrated NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments – to its live sports slate across Europe and South Africa, marking an expansion of ESPN’s global NCAA rights agreement onto the Disney+ platform.

From 17 March through 7 April 2026, Disney+ customers can enjoy all 134 NCAA tournament games live as part of their Disney+ subscription. With this addition, fans across Europe and South Africa* will be able to enjoy even more of ESPN’s premier U.S. sports programming on Disney+.

March Madness is a yearly highlight in U.S. college basketball, featuring single-elimination tournaments with 68 teams each for the men’s and women’s championships. The event builds suspense from the opening rounds to the highly anticipated Final Four, with teams announced on Selection Sunday, held on 15 March 2026. The University of Florida Gators and University of Connecticut Huskies hold last year’s men’s and women’s titles, respectively.

This expansion harnesses ESPN’s long-standing NCAA rights portfolio – which includes more than 40 championship events – and reflects the integration of college sports across The Walt Disney Company platforms. With over three decades as the exclusive broadcaster of Women’s March Madness, ESPN has driven sustained audience growth in the U.S. and internationally, and now brings that expertise to Disney+ across Europe and South Africa.

With March Madness joining Disney+’s European sports lineup – alongside the UEFA Women’s Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League in Denmark and Sweden, and LALIGA in the UK and Ireland – fans can look forward to even more world-class live sporting moments.

Executive Quotes:

Diego Londono, SVP Networks & Sports EMEA at The Walt Disney Company, said: “Bringing March Madness to Disney+ customers across Europe reflects the ongoing collaboration between ESPN and the NCAA, and the commitment both organizations share to grow college basketball internationally. ESPN’s decades of experience showcasing championship moments allows us to foster greater appreciation for collegiate athletics, and we’re thrilled to help connect more fans to the passion and tradition of the men’s and women’s tournaments on Disney+.”

Added Dan Gavitt, NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball: “Collaborating with ESPN and Disney+ allows us to share the excitement of March Madness with a global audience that already values college basketball. The NCAA tournament is the ultimate stage for student-athletes, and broadening access to that experience helps grow appreciation for and interest in the game worldwide.”

Disney+ is available from R49 per month – with no hidden costs and the ability to cancel anytime. There’s something for everyone to watch, with a lifetime of great stories and a constantly growing library of new TV shows, blockbuster movies, exclusive Originals, and live sport. From Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Hulu, Disney+ spans everything from documentaries to critically acclaimed drama, comedy to classic animation, and general entertainment. Recently launched series available to stream now exclusively on Disney+ include the highly anticipated season of Paradise, a new international thriller, FX’s The Beauty and the first instalment of Ryan Murphy’s love story anthology, FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Upcoming premieres include new drama series, The Testaments, and the highly anticipated second season of Rivals.

A Subversive Exploration Of Survival And Resilience

Created by Reynolds’ Maximum Effort in partnership with Wildstar Films (a Fremantle company), UNDERDOGS celebrates the survival stories of creatures often ignored by traditional media. From manatees weaponising flatulence to shrimp that kill with soundwaves, this five-part series turns the wildlife genre on its head.

Speaking on the series, Reynolds noted:

“UNDERDOGS gave me the chance to work with National Geographic and finally make something my kids could watch without trauma. Well, mostly.”

Each episode confronts viewers with questions about our collective bias towards certain species while ignoring others playing equally essential ecological roles.

Unlikely Heroes, Unfiltered Narration

Among the standout features is the series’ refusal to romanticise or sanitise the animal kingdom. Segments like Superzeroes, Terrible Parents, and Total Grossout peel back nature’s polished veneer, exposing its grittier, weirder side.

Award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams (The Martian, Shrek) scores the series, while Green Day contributes an anthemic title track, Underdog, available on their expanded Saviors (édition de luxe) album.

More Than Entertainment: A Timely Commentary

While undeniably entertaining, UNDERDOGS subtly interrogates our relationship with nature and the media’s role in curating which creatures are worthy of attention. In a world obsessed with influencers and icons, perhaps it’s time audiences consider the overlooked — the invisible custodians of balance and biodiversity.

As modern media becomes increasingly filtered, UNDERDOGS poses a timely challenge: how much of the natural world are we choosing not to see?

Exclusive Access to State-of-the-Art Technology Preserves Titanic Wreck Site for Future Generations, Marking a New Era in Underwater Archeology

The 90-Minute Special, From BAFTA Award-Winning Atlantic Productions, Premieres Sunday, 13 April at 21:00 on National Geographic

Johannesburg, 9 April 2025: 14 April 2025 marks the 113th anniversary of the R.M.S. Titanic’s sinking – an event that has fuelled global fascination for over a century. National Geographic presents TITANIC: THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION, a groundbreaking 90-minute documentary that offers an unprecedented look at history’s most infamous maritime disaster. Using exclusive access to cutting-edge underwater scanning technology, including 715,000 digitally captured images, the special unveils the most precise model of the Titanic ever created: a full-scale, 1:1 digital twin, accurate down to the rivet. From award-winning Atlantic Productions, TITANIC: THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION premieres across Africa on Sunday, 13 April, at 21:00 (CAT) on National Geographic (DStv 181 and Startimes 220).

In 2022, award-winning and pioneering filmmaker Anthony Geffen and his team followed deep-sea mapping company Magellan as they undertook the largest underwater 3D scanning project of its kind, mapping the wreck 12,500 feet below the North Atlantic. Over three weeks, they worked around the clock, producing 16 terabytes of data, 715,000 still images, and 4K footage, capturing the Titanic in unparalleled detail. After nearly two years of analysis, a team of leading historians, engineers, and forensic experts, including Titanic analyst Parks Stephenson, metallurgist Jennifer Hooper, and master mariner Captain Chris Hearn, come together in TITANIC: THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION to reconstruct the ship’s final moments—challenging long-held assumptions and revealing new insights into what truly happened on that fateful night in 1912.

Stephenson, Hooper and Hearn dissect the wreckage up close on a full-scale colossal LED volume stage, walking around the ship in its final resting place. From the boiler room where engineers worked valiantly to keep the lights on until the bitter end to the first-class cabins where the ship ripped in two, the scan brings them face-to-face with where the tragedy unfolded.

A CGI illustration of the compartments of the Titanic. (National Geographic)

Notable insights include the following:

Visible Open Steam Valve
The team discovers a steam valve in the open position, validating eyewitness accounts that the ship’s engineers remained at their posts in boiler room two for over two hours after impact, keeping the electricity on and allowing wireless distress signals to be sent. The 35 men may have saved hundreds of lives while sacrificing their own.

Hull Fragments
Sifting through the hull fragments scattered across the wreck site, the team reconstructs them like a puzzle, providing a startling glimpse into the ocean liner’s final moments. The Titanic didn’t split cleanly in two—it was violently torn apart, ripping through first-class cabins where prominent passengers like J.J. Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim may have sought refuge as the ship went down.

First Officer William Murdoch
Further analysis of the digital scans adds to the evidence exonerating First Officer Murdoch, long accused of abandoning his post. The position of a lifeboat davit—seen in new hi-res detail—suggests his crew was preparing a launch moments before the starboard side was engulfed, corroborating Second Officer Charles Lightoller’s testimony that Murdoch was swept away by the sea.

The 90-minute special also examines in stunning detail the 15-square-mile debris field, rich with hundreds of personal artefacts, including pocket watches, purses, gold coins, hair combs, shoes and a shark’s tooth charm, offering a poignant glimpse into the lives lost. Historian Yasmin Khan and the team connect these items to their original owners. Scans also reveal the wreck’s alarming deterioration, with iconic areas of the wreck already collapsing. However, thanks to this digital twin, the Titanic is preserved in perfect detail as it appeared in 2022, securing its place in history for generations to come and marking a new era in underwater archaeology.

TITANIC: THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION is produced by Atlantic Productions for National Geographic. For Atlantic, Anthony Geffen produces, Lina Zilinskaite is the senior producer, and Fergus Colville is the director. Simon Raikes and Chad Cohen serve as executive producers for National Geographic.

South African performers feature in local episodes, featuring incredible acts of magical performance

Johannesburg, 20 March 2025: In celebration of the launch of the new National Geographic series DAVID BLAINE: DO NOT ATTEMPT, which features an episode shot entirely in South Africa, The Walt Disney Company Africa hosted a launch event in Johannesburg this week. On Tuesday 18 March, 100 press, content creators and advertising sales partners were transported to a magical world inspired by the programme, filled with optical illusions, interactive exhibits, photo opportunities and engaging installations, before previewing the much-anticipated locally filmed installment.

This six-part series follows world-renowned magician and endurance artist David Blaine exploring the world through the lens of magic. In Mzansi, the magician meets local artists, trailblazers and performers, including Muzi (aka Muziwakhe Mazibuko), Kayla (Kaylin Oliphant) and Sam Sam (Samkeliso Samsam Thubane), all of whom were present at the event.

Muzi led Blaine, as his guide, around South Africa during production and contributed three songs for the episode. Kayla and Sam Sam choreographed and performed an incredible car-spinning stunt performance with Blaine. The audience was enthralled by the episode, which included jaw-dropping magical moments, spanning over various provinces, epitomising the title “Do Not Attempt.”

Before watching the episode filmed locally, local illusionist Wian Van Den Berg captivated guests with sleight-of-hand tricks, inspired by Blaine, citing the legendary magician as a seminal influence in his development of performance magic.

Participating content creators included Adre Muller, Austin Macaskill, Danny Painter, Jo Judnick-Wilson, Marc Gregory, Mary Mutlanyane, Nafisa Akabor, Pitsi Africa, Rozanne McKenzie, Simone Dominique, Tansey Coetzee, Taryn Louch and Zuraida Jardine.

Premiering each Friday at 18:50 (CAT) from 28 March on DStv 181 and Startimes 220, DAVID BLAINE: DO NOT ATTEMPT will also be available on Disney+ in South Africa. In the series, Blaine takes us on a fascinating cultural exchange and a jaw-dropping journey through extraordinary cultures, where he meets with performers and masters—kindred spirits who inspire and share with him exceptional skills (and secrets)—in Brazil, Southeast Asia, India, the Arctic Circle, South Africa and Japan.

DAVID BLAINE: DO NOT ATTEMPT is a celebration of pushing boundaries safely and responsibly, rooted in years of training, preparation and a process of refinement. Viewers are reminded that professionals do all of the feats shown in the series with safety teams to prevent any accidents. None of the activities from the series should ever be practised.
