On April 14, 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Mcebisi Jonas, former Deputy Finance Minister, as the nation’s special envoy to the United States. This strategic move aims to mend the frayed diplomatic ties between South Africa and the U.S., which have deteriorated following President Donald Trump’s return to office. Key points of contention include South Africa’s land reform policies and its legal actions against Israel at the International Court of Justice, leading to reduced U.S. aid and the expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador.

Jonas is also the independent non-executive chairman of MTN Group, a major telecommunications company. While MTN has faced scrutiny over alleged dealings in Iran, there is no direct evidence linking Jonas to any misconduct within the company.

Jonas is notably recognised for his anti-corruption stance, particularly his testimony during the judicial inquiry into state capture. He alleged that in 2015, he was offered R600-million by the Gupta family to accept the position of Finance Minister and advance their business interests. Jonas claimed he rejected the offer and faced threats as a result.

However, Jonas’s appointment has not been without controversy. Critics have resurfaced past remarks where Jonas allegedly referred to President Trump as a “racist, Homophobic Homophobe and narcissistic right-winger,” raising questions about his suitability to repair bilateral relations. Additionally, scepticism persists regarding the veracity of his claims against the Guptas, with some labelling him a “pathological liar.”

The success of Jonas’s mission to restore diplomatic relations will depend on his ability to navigate these controversies and engage effectively with U.S. officials. His past experiences and current roles present both opportunities and challenges in this endeavour.
