Mall Of Africa Uplifts Local School With New Assembly Area Initiative

Netflix And Gift Of The Givers Join Forces For Meaningful Community Infrastructure Project
Johannesburg, 15 May 2025: In a meaningful display of community-driven impact, Mall of Africa has officially delivered a newly constructed assembly area to Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Rabie Ridge, Midrand. Funded through a festive season gift-wrapping initiative, the project represents a practical investment into sustainable infrastructure for one of Midrand’s most under-resourced schools.
Working in collaboration with the Attacq Foundation and the Gift of the Givers Foundation, Mall of Africa raised R73,833 from its December gift-wrapping station — an initiative sponsored by Netflix in support of The Squid Game Experience. These funds were channelled directly into the construction of a larger, sheltered assembly point for the school, alongside the refurbishment of its existing assembly area.
The improvements come as a lifeline for Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School, which accommodates over 2,400 learners, many from disadvantaged households, within a modest facility composed of mobile container classrooms. Infrastructure upgrades of this nature have remained scarce since the school’s inception in 2003.
“The importance of education as a tool for empowerment cannot be overstated. We’re proud to invest in a resource that benefits the children of this community now and into the future,” stated Yasmeen Lorgat, General Manager of Mall of Africa.
Additionally, the remaining funds will bolster the school’s feeding scheme, providing vital daily meals to its learners. The school’s principal, Nthabiseng Sebola, expressed gratitude, describing the new assembly structure as a symbol of hope and a safer, more dignified space for the children to gather and grow.
This initiative forms part of Mall of Africa’s broader mission to foster purposeful partnerships and long-term community upliftment through tangible, needs-driven projects.
