Investigation Exposes Disturbing Conditions at Aryan Benevolent Child and Youth Care
A recent investigative probe has uncovered alarming allegations of misconduct and neglect at the Aryan Benevolent Child and Youth Care Centre. Beyond initial reports of physical abuse, the findings reveal a troubling environment where children allegedly faced hunger, religious coercion, and emotional mistreatment. This revelation has ignited widespread concern and calls for immediate action to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable minors under the care of the facility.
The Department of Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal initiated a comprehensive investigation in response to disturbing reports received earlier this year. The investigation, conducted over three weeks by a task team comprising 11 experts, aimed to assess conditions and treatment protocols for the over 100 children residing at the centre.
Key findings from the executive summary highlight allegations of secondary abuse, including verbal harassment and stigmatisation based on the children’s backgrounds. There were also reports that children were coerced into participating in religious activities contrary to their beliefs, which raised serious concerns about constitutional rights violations.
Of significant concern was the inadequate provision of food to the children, with many reportedly going hungry due to irregular and insufficient meals. The centre’s menu was found not to comply with departmental standards, relying heavily on donated food items instead.
The investigation also underscored severe staffing deficiencies, particularly the absence of adequate social work support. With only one social worker responsible for over a hundred children, the capacity to deliver effective developmental and therapeutic programmes was severely compromised.
MEC Mbali Shinga expressed deep concern over the findings, emphasising that the welfare of these children should be paramount, regardless of funding sources or donor concerns. She reiterated the department’s commitment to ensuring adequate care and protection for all minors in institutional settings.
In response to the report, the management of the Aryan Benevolent Child and Youth Care Centre has pledged to review and address the issues raised. CEO Ray Naguran acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but assured stakeholders that corrective measures would be implemented to prevent future incidents.
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement agencies also involved to address any criminal aspects of the reported abuses. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information or concerns about child welfare at the centre to come forward and assist in ensuring justice and accountability.
As investigations continue and corrective measures are contemplated, the Aryan Benevolent Child and Youth Care Centre remains under scrutiny, prompting broader discussions on institutional accountability and the protection of children’s rights across South Africa.
