Gateway Theatre Of Shopping Revamp Makes Headway
A New Era of Retail and Lifestyle Awaits Shoppers
KwaZulu-Natal, 4 December 2024: Gateway Theatre of Shopping, the ultimate shopping, leisure and entertainment haven in KwaZulu-Natal, is pleased to confirm that its extensive multimillion-rand revamp is making headway. After months of construction work at the largest retail destination in the province, significant progress is evident, and the results are poised to elevate the shopping experience in the over 177,000m² centre to a new level.
Phase one of the renovation, which started two years ago, included introducing exquisite triple-volume faceted glass façades around the main lifts, an eye-catching new geometric tiling design and curved organic ceiling bulkheads. It also included a luxurious transformation of the Great Hall around Gateway’s entrance axis. The rejuvenation of the centre’s north wing commenced earlier this year, and extends the revitalized aesthetic.
A Glimpse into the vision for the upgraded centre
The focus of the current phase of the renovations is largely aesthetic, aimed at enhancing the overall ambience and visual appeal while creating a more modern and inviting atmosphere for visitors. Upon completion, shoppers will be greeted by a sophisticated setting featuring clean lines, luxurious finishes, and a predominantly white palette that maximises natural light and visibility throughout the mall. Visitors will appreciate the simplified, neutral setting that emphasizes store shopfronts while prioritizing an ambience of openness.
The removal of dated colours and details will ensure that the mall retains its fresh aesthetic, enhancing its appeal as a contemporary retail destination. Integrated LED displays will further elevate the overall shopping experience, aligning with the modern minimalistic design introduced in the upgraded Great Hall.
“Our goal is to elevate every aspect of the visitors’ shopping experience,” shares Feysel Potgieter, General Manager of Gateway. “From better flow through the mall to more communal spaces and improved accessibility, the refurbishment will make Gateway a place where people continue to want to shop, dine, relax, and spend time with friends and family.”
The remodelling of the north wing and entrance 7 nodes will continue into 2025, including an overhaul of the restrooms near the SPCC store. During this period, staff and shoppers are advised to use alternative ablution facilities within the mall, with directional signage prominently displayed to guide visitors to these facilities.
Furthermore, the beloved water fountain in the atrium is getting an exciting technology-based upgrade. In addition to featuring energy-efficient lighting with a broader colour spectrum, the enhanced fountain will have endless possibilities for choreographed water displays and mesmerizing motion, synchronized with music.
Sustainability meets style
Sustainability is at the heart of Gateway’s refurbishment, combining technical advancements with noticeable comfort for shoppers. Energy-efficient upgrades, such as low-energy LED lighting and performance glass for better insulation, are designed to reduce reliance on air conditioning and ensure a comfortable environment. These measures not only help lower energy consumption and promote long-term durability but also create a more pleasant shopping environment, ensuring visitors can enjoy the mall in all seasons.
“By incorporating sustainable practices, we aim to minimise our environmental footprint while enhancing the shopping experience. Using high-quality, durable materials ensures a modern aesthetic and reduces the need for frequent updates in the future,” explains Potgieter.
New stores ready to welcome shoppers
In addition to the improved shopping environment, Gateway features an array of new stand-alone retailers, some of which have already opened while others are set to open soon. Some of these include Bennett Read, Calvin Klein, True Religion and United Colours of Benetton, all making their KwaZulu-Natal debuts, as well as Beauty on Tapp and Jo Malone. These additions will complement Gateway’s existing bouquet of over 380 stores, further cementing its status as a retail powerhouse
that offers an unparalleled retail experience within the KZN Province.
Patience rewarded: a new Gateway experience awaits
“Even though we schedule the majority of disruptive work at night, we understand that the renovation is sometimes inconvenient to our shoppers and tenants, and we are deeply appreciative of their patience and support,” says Potgieter. “The good news is that the team have made significant strides, with several improvements already visible. This revitalised space is designed with our shoppers in mind, offering a unique blend of modern design, sustainability, and a world of new experiences. While the work continues, we are confident that the outcome will be worth the wait.”
To ensure uninterrupted shopping during peak times, Gateway has planned a pause in construction activities during the festive season, to enable a hassle-free experience for holiday shoppers.
As Gateway continues its extensive upgrade, the centre invites shoppers to discover the evolving transformation that is already redefining the new aesthetic space.
