The South African TikTok community is in mourning after the tragic death of Dubula Mbatha, a 32-year-old known for his passionate advocacy of maskandi music. Mbatha, whose death follows a violent shooting in Johannesburg, had recently become embroiled in a social media dispute with a powerful Durban taxi boss, which some believe may have contributed to his tragic fate.

Dubula Mbatha rose to fame on TikTok for his unapologetic support of maskandi music and his candid opinions, particularly when it came to those who criticized the genre. His online presence garnered a loyal following, with many fans appreciating his outspoken nature. However, his social media interactions took a darker turn when he publicly insulted Mavava Sikhakhane, an influential member of the Gcaba family and taxi owner in Durban. In a TikTok video, Mbatha referred to Sikhakhane as “a little boy,” a remark that left many concerned about his safety.

Despite the insult, Sikhakhane did not respond publicly. However, those familiar with the situation warned that the comment could lead to trouble. In an attempt to mend fences, Mbatha later posted another video, apologizing to Sikhakhane, calling him his “older brother,” and seemingly diffusing the tension. This apology appeared to bring calm, but tragedy struck soon after.

On Sunday, 8 December, Mbatha visited friends at a Sasol garage near Jules Hostel in Jeppestown, Johannesburg. It was here that a gunman appeared and opened fire, shooting Mbatha 16 times. Witnesses were left in shock as Mbatha collapsed from his injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but died from his wounds on Monday, 9 December.

His close friend, who was present at the scene but wishes to remain anonymous, described their last moments together. “I had no idea that would be the last time I saw him. He was so full of life,” the friend said, recalling how they had planned a casual braai (barbecue) before the violence erupted.

The news has deeply affected the maskandi music community. Legendary musician Ali Mgube expressed his sorrow, stating, “We’ve lost a brother. His love for maskandi and his presence will be deeply missed.”

Investigation and Police Response:
The Gauteng Police confirmed the shooting and have opened a murder investigation. Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), stated that while the motive is still unclear, the authorities are following leads. “We are appealing to anyone with information to assist in the investigation,” Masondo said, urging the public to contact CrimeStop or the nearest police station.

While the exact motive remains uncertain, sources have suggested that Mbatha’s insults and online feuds could have played a role in the shooting. In addition to the dispute with Sikhakhane, Mbatha was known for challenging other figures in the maskandi music scene, notably those who criticized popular artist Mthandeni “Gcokama elisha” Mdletshe.

The death of Dubula Mbatha serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from online confrontations and the real-world consequences of social media disputes. As the investigation unfolds, the maskandi community, his fans, and those who knew him continue to mourn the loss of a passionate advocate for the genre.
