Zevenwacht Mall supported the Kuils River event with free health screenings, wellness activities and donations to two local organisations.

Cape Town, 19 October 2026: Kuils River welcomed more than 1,700 runners and walkers on Sunday, 27 September, as the 15th annual Voet of the Wine Route Race brought participants together around Zevenwacht Mall. Coordinated by In Touch Athletics Club, the event saw participation rise by 18% from the previous year, drawing people from across the surrounding area and further afield. The mall backed the initiative in line with its ongoing commitment to community engagement and activities that encourage healthier lifestyles.

This year, the mall extended its involvement beyond race day through its Road 2 Race Day campaign, which gave shoppers and race participants access to free health screenings and wellness checks in the lead-up to the event. The programme also included fitness, physiotherapy, nutrition and cardio dance demonstrations, providing practical information and support to help people better understand different aspects of their health and prepare for the race.

“For us, the Voet of the Wine Route has always been about our community coming together,” said Esley Du Plessis, marketing manager at Zevenwacht Mall. “The Road 2 Race Day campaign gave us an opportunity to build on that by making useful health and wellness information available to our shoppers. Whether someone was preparing to run the race or simply wanted to know a little more about their health, there was something practical they could take away from the experience.”

Community Wellness Beyond Race Day

Community support also formed an important part of this year’s event. As part of the race’s charity initiative, Zevenwacht Mall collaborated with In Touch Athletics Club to make donations of R3,500 each to Hope House and Friends of Compassion. Both organisations work within the surrounding area, providing assistance to people who need additional support.

“The race gives us an opportunity not only to encourage people to get active, but also to support organisations doing important work within our community,” added Du Plessis. “That combination of wellness, connection and giving back is what makes this event particularly meaningful to us.”

Zevenwacht Mall thanked In Touch Athletics Club for coordinating another successful race, as well as the runners, walkers, families, wellness partners, volunteers and supporters who contributed to the event. Following the success of this year’s race, the mall will once again welcome runners and their families for the 16th annual In Touch Voet of the Wine Route Race in 2027.

Thirteen Cape Flats schools will compete for R80,000 in prizes at the 24 October showcase, themed around the choices shaping young people’s futures.

Cape Town, 16 October 2026: Sometimes, moving forward means stopping, taking a different turn or finding the courage to change direction. This October, learners from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats will transform familiar street signs into symbols of life’s decisions, exploring the challenges they face and the paths they can choose for themselves.

Liberty Promenade’s annual Next Generation Musical Showcase will return on Saturday, 24 October 2026 for its 15th year, bringing learners together for a celebration of music, movement, storytelling and creative expression.

This year’s theme, En Route to Change, will challenge participating schools to use familiar street signs as inspiration for performances exploring the decisions young people face as they navigate school, friendships, family, personal growth and the digital world.

Turning Signs Into Stories

From stop signs and warnings to arrows pointing towards a new destination, learners will reimagine the signs around them as symbols of the different directions life can take.

Through music, poetry, storytelling and performance, groups of five to eight learners from each school will transform the stage into their own journey. Themes may include decision-making, resilience, responsibility, online behaviour, uncertainty and the freedom to change direction when the path ahead no longer feels right.

At the heart of the theme is a simple message: signs may point the way, but young people ultimately have a choice about the direction they take.

The creativity will also extend beyond the stage. Each school will create a street-sign-inspired installation reflecting its interpretation of choice, life experiences and safer online behaviour. These will be displayed at Liberty Promenade, giving the wider community an opportunity to engage with the learners’ messages.

Following the showcase, the creations will form part of a Community Choice exhibition, where shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite school performance and creation, while also standing a chance to win R10,000.

Young Voices, Big Ideas

Participating schools will compete for a share of R80,000 in cash prizes, up from R60,000 in 2025, which will support improvements and educational needs at the winning schools. For Liberty Promenade, however, the value of Next Generation also lies in giving young people an audience for what they have to say.

“Every year, these learners remind us just how much young people have to say when they are given the opportunity and the freedom to express it in their own way,” says Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade. “This year’s theme is particularly relevant because young people are making choices in a world that can be difficult and noisy. We want Next Generation to remind them that their voices matter, their choices matter and changing direction can sometimes be an important part of moving forward.”

The 13 participating schools are Beacon School for LSEN, Caradale Primary School, Cascade Primary School, Eastville Primary School, Eisleben Road Primary School, Jamaicaweg Primary School, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Mondale High School, Oval North High School, Portland High School, Rocklands High School, Spine Road High School and West End Primary School.

Liberty Promenade will host the Next Generation Musical Showcase in its Food District from 10:00 AM on Saturday, 24 October. Entry is free, but with limited seating available, guests are encouraged to arrive early.

More details about the shopping centre and its projects are available at libertypromenade.co.za.
Cape Town, 15 October 2026 — South African rugby star Cheslin Kolbe will meet fans at Cavendish Square on Thursday, 22 October, for the launch of his memoir, Cheslin Kolbe: Sidestepping the Odds. Organised in collaboration with Exclusive Books, the event begins at 19h00 and celebrates the achievements and personal journey of the two-time Rugby World Cup champion.

I think it is well known to all that the state of education in South Africa is rather abysmal. Especially, the poor communities are not receiving a proper education.

I am involved with an educare, and from my experience with the organisation, I can testify to how difficult it is not only to run an educare but even to get it started. It is extremely difficult due to the following reasons.

The government requirements are prohibitive for any community-based educare startup. Not only is it impossible to fulfil the requirements from a practical perspective, but it is impossible from a financial perspective. Practically, it is impossible because the requirements are based on first-world standards which cannot be met by a third-world reality. Financially, it is impossible due to the immense costs that have to be incurred to be able to fulfil the requirements.

Furthermore, the government offers no assistance at all. It merely comes with a checklist to see if one complies.

Hence, township residents cannot start educare centres legally. This means there are hardly any educare centres because the government is not providing any.

Another immense hurdle is funding. Even if an educare centre has managed to get registered, it is very difficult to get sufficient funding. The educare centre cannot generate income from fees if it is serving the poorest of the poor, as they obviously cannot pay fees that can fund an educare centre.

Therefore, an educare centre is dependent on receiving funds from the government and donors. The government does not provide adequate funding. Hence, an educare requires additional funding from the private sector. Even the donations from well-meaning individuals are insufficient. What an educare requires is funding from companies.

But here is the difficulty. Most companies do not wish to fund salaries. And for an educare, whose entire programme depends entirely on its teachers, funding for teacher salaries is essential. No funds for salaries means no teachers. No teachers means no educare centres. No educare centres means millions of children do not receive an education.

The Educare sector requires two important shifts in the consciousness of society:

Government must make all efforts to assist educare centres in their startup and registration process.

Donors need to fund teacher salaries. Donors need to recognise that by supporting an educare centre meaningfully, teacher salaries need to be funded. You can fund the property, you can fund the food, but it will be an empty educare centre if there is no teacher due to the lack of funds for salaries.

So, this is our heartfelt appeal to society as a whole. Support the teachers: they are the ones who educate our children, a most vital role in society.

South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation awarded R100,000 grants in three categories. The Boy Who Spoke Static from Nigeria won Best Fiction, The Ones With the Tempered Flowers from Kenya won Best Non-fiction, and Ethiopia’s Sunday Morning won Best Animation.

Other recipients included Libya’s The Birth of Derna, which received the Climate Story Labs Award, and Sudan’s Where Do I Belong?, which secured support from Docubox and the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund.

Building International Industry Connections

Beyond direct funding, several awards provide flights, accommodation, accreditation, development programmes and access to international festivals and markets in 2026 and 2027.

These opportunities can help filmmakers develop projects, establish partnerships and bring African stories to wider audiences. However, the longer-term impact will depend on how successfully the selected projects progress towards production, distribution and release.

The Durban FilmMart Institute said this year’s programme encouraged discussions around alternative funding, co-production and partnerships.

The event was held in association with MultiChoice, with principal funding from the National Lotteries Commission and the National Film and Video Foundation, alongside support from other industry partners.

With more than R2 million in awards and opportunities on offer, the question now is how many of these projects will translate industry recognition into completed films that reach audiences at home and internationally.

Gateway Marks 25 Years With New Retail Experiences, Birthday Competitions and Community Celebrations

KwaZulu-Natal, 8 October 2026:Gateway Theatre of Shopping celebrates its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter century of growth, exciting milestones and unforgettable moments shared with the shoppers and communities who have helped shape its journey into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most popular shopping destinations.

Since opening on 27 September 2001, Gateway has grown from approximately 118,000m² to around 176,000m², while its store count has increased from around 117 to more than 380. Today, the centre welcomes over 24 million visits annually and provides employment for more than 5,000 people.

For Gateway, however, its 25th birthday is as much about what comes next as it is about looking back.

“Gateway has changed considerably over 25 years because our customers, and the way they spend their time, has changed too,” says Ayesha Sewbaran, Marketing Manager at Gateway. “This birthday is an opportunity to thank the people who have supported us while continuing to give them new reasons to visit, discover and enjoy Gateway.”

25 Years In, There Is Still Plenty That’s New

A line-up of new stores and experiences will add to Gateway’s offering. These include Aura, a premium coffee concept featuring a robotic barista alongside organic African and South American coffees, luxury desserts and wellness treats. Fairways will bring a dedicated golf lifestyle concept to the centre, while Shooters will introduce a competitive socialising experience combining games, food, drinks and events.

New retail arrivals also include a bespoke Liverpool store, alongside the new flagship Foschini store. The additions reflect Gateway’s continued shift beyond traditional retail, bringing shopping, dining, entertainment and experiences together in one convenient destination.

A Birthday Shared With Shoppers

The celebrations took on a special meaning through a Charity Car Run in partnership with Auto-emotive and Reach For A Dream. 25 Young dreamers each had the opportunity to choose their favourite supercar for a thrill ride around Gateway, followed by a morning of family fun and birthday cake.

Gateway is also turning its birthday into a treat for shoppers, with four experiences valued at R10,000 each up for grabs. The prizes will cover fashion, beauty, entertainment and fine dining, giving four winners the chance to enjoy Gateway their way.

“Reaching 25 years is a milestone we wanted to share,” adds Sewbaran. “Whether that means discovering something new, winning an incredible experience or helping create a memorable morning for 25 very special Dreamers, this celebration is about the community that has grown with us.”

Gateway’s 25th birthday campaign will run from 25 September to 22 October 2026.

The Marketing Zoo Launches an Annual Award Recognising Contributions To Afrikaans Entertainment

Benoni showed its heart this past weekend as thousands of festivalgoers gathered for Glimlag Fees. Some of South Africa’s best-known artists joined local businesses, schools and vendors in demonstrating what can happen when a community comes together to support a local festival.

Amid the festivities, a new tradition was also born when The Marketing Zoo launched an annual award recognising contributions to the Afrikaans entertainment industry.

The award will now be presented annually at Glimlag Fees to someone who, through their work, passion and continued involvement, has made a meaningful impact on the Afrikaans entertainment industry.

Marting Bester

According to Wian Smith-Venter, CEO of The Marketing Zoo, the aim is to recognise the people who have helped build an industry that continues to evolve and grow.

“We often talk about the artists on stage, but the Afrikaans entertainment industry is made up of so many people who, both in front of and behind the scenes, have invested their time, energy, creativity and passion over many years. With this award, we want to recognise one of those people each year and tell their story,” says Smith-Venter.

“We want this to become a special Glimlag Fees tradition. Every year, we want to honour someone whose career, influence or contribution reflects the people who have helped shape the Afrikaans entertainment industry and continue to move it forward.”

The first recipient of the award was Vicki van der Merwe, one of the directors of The Marketing Zoo, who this year celebrates 25 years in the entertainment, media and marketing industries.

Van der Merwe began her career in Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, where she organised concerts for artists including Dozi, the late Theuns Jordaan, Steve Hofmeyr and Smokie, among many others.

It was the beginning of a career that would later take her into the media industry. She worked, among other roles, as marketing manager for well-known publications including Huisgenoot, YOU and DRUM, and was part of the industry during the years when Huisgenoot Skouspel was one of the major highlights on the Afrikaans entertainment calendar.

Over the past 25 years, Van der Merwe has witnessed first-hand how dramatically the entertainment and media landscape has changed – from a world in which faxes and telephone calls formed part of everyday business to today’s instant digital communication, streaming services and social media.

“It is an incredible privilege to still be doing what I love after 25 years. When I started working, we barely used email. We sent faxes, picked up the phone and built many of our relationships face to face. Today, an artist can communicate directly with thousands of people within seconds,” says Van der Merwe.

“We have grown alongside the technology, the artists and the audiences. The platforms have changed, the way music is discovered and marketed has changed, and the speed at which content travels is something we could hardly have imagined 25 years ago.”

Yet she believes the most important part of the entertainment industry has remained unchanged.

“The heart of this industry remains its people. It is about talent, stories, relationships and that special connection between an artist and an audience. Technology may change the way we create that connection, but it can never replace the humanity behind it.”

One of her greatest passions remains the development of young artists.

“There are few things as special to me as recognising potential in a young artist and then watching that person grow, gain confidence and ultimately find their own place in the industry. If you can play even a small part in that journey, it is a privilege.”

At the same time, Van der Merwe says she remains in awe of artists who have managed to stay relevant over decades.

“Some of the artists I worked with early in my career are still performing on major stages and drawing audiences today. To still reach new generations of people after 20 or 25 years does not happen by chance. It takes talent, hard work, adaptability and a genuine love for your craft and your audience.”

Although the award recognises her 25 years in the industry, she certainly does not regard it as a conclusion.

“I actually feel that I am far from finished. There are still so many stories to tell, young talent to develop and opportunities to create. After 25 years, I still get excited when the stage lights come on and an artist walks out. I hope I never lose that feeling.”

The launch of the new award took place against the backdrop of the Glimlag Fees, which demonstrated just how strongly a community can rally behind a local festival.

Nearly 15 000 festivalgoers gathered at the Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds from early in the day for a celebration of Afrikaans music, food, vendors, entertainment and togetherness.

For Smith-Venter, the community’s response was one of the festival’s greatest highlights.

“You can plan for months, book artists, erect structures and try to perfect every possible detail, but ultimately it is the people who determine whether a festival truly comes alive.”

“Benoni showed up. People sang along, laughed, spent time together and supported the vendors. Looking out across the grounds and seeing that sea of people was an incredible moment for us. We are genuinely grateful for the way the community embraced Glimlag Fees.”

That support began long before festival day.

In the run-up to Glimlag Fees, the team visited local schools, where the enthusiasm of learners, teachers and parents helped build momentum ahead of the festival.

“Our schools opened their doors to us and the children’s energy was infectious. We want to thank every school, teacher, parent and learner who welcomed and supported us. They were part of this journey long before the first festivalgoer walked through the gates,” says Smith-Venter.

The many vendors and local businesses offering products, food and services at Glimlag Fees were, according to The Marketing Zoo, equally important to the success and character of the day.

“Our vendors believed in Glimlag Fees with us. They prepared, purchased stock, arrived early and set up their stalls. We sincerely want to thank every person who had a stand or space and became part of the day.”

“A festival doesn’t only happen in front of the stage. It happens everywhere – at the food stalls, exhibitions, among families spending time together and in the conversations between people. Our vendors played a major part in creating that experience.”

Some of the artists created one of the day’s most memorable moments when they were flown in by helicopter, making a special landing at the festival grounds.

With artists including Kurt Darren, Spoegwolf and Demi Lee Moore on the programme, Afrikaans music formed the heartbeat of the festival throughout the day.

For The Marketing Zoo, the weekend ultimately demonstrated how the different parts of the Afrikaans entertainment industry come together – artists and audiences, media and marketing, entrepreneurs and brands, emerging talent and established names, as well as the many people working behind the scenes to make it all possible.

It is precisely this broader industry, and the people who have helped build it over the years, that The Marketing Zoo intends to honour through its new annual award at Glimlag Fees.

“We have attached the first name to this award this year, but this is the beginning of something we hope to grow for many years to come,” says Smith-Venter.

“Next year, we will once again honour someone who has made a meaningful impact on the Afrikaans entertainment industry. We hope that, in years to come, when people look at the list of recipients, it will tell something of the history, evolution and people who helped shape this remarkable industry.”

The overwhelming support from the community, sponsors, vendors, schools, artists and every festivalgoer also enabled Glimlag Fees to fulfil a greater purpose: supporting Smile Foundation.

From the outset, it was important to The Marketing Zoo that the festival should not only be a day of music and entertainment, but also an opportunity to make a tangible difference.

“It makes every ticket purchased, every vendor supported and every person who was part of the day so much more meaningful. Together, Benoni did not only make a festival possible – they helped us give back and support the incredible work of Smile Foundation,” says Smith-Venter.

And for the team behind Glimlag Fees, one message stands above all others following this year’s festival:

“We organised Glimlag Fees, but Benoni made it a festival. To every person who showed up, supported us, celebrated with us and believed with us – thank you. Benoni showed its heart.”

Bedford’s Monthly Contribution Supports Maintenance, Public Space Restoration and Local Employment

Johannesburg, 7 October 2026: From fixing potholes and caring for local parks to improving public spaces and creating jobs, Bedfordview has seen a number of practical changes taking shape with the backing of local businesses. Among those supporters is Bedford Shopping Centre, which contributes R25 000 a month to Better Bedfordview, helping the nonprofit continue its work throughout the neighbourhood.

Over the past four years, Better Bedfordview has repaired over 1,000 potholes, maintained roads, pavements, parks and greenery, restored neglected public spaces and created employment for 25 people. Bedford also regularly provides additional support for the organisation and the work it undertakes in the suburb.

“Bedfordview is our home too. Our shoppers, staff, businesses and neighbours use these roads and public spaces every day, so investing in the area around us is a natural extension of the role we want Bedford to play in the community,” says Linda Linnow, General Manager of Bedford. “Better Bedfordview has shown what consistent, practical action can achieve and we are proud to support that work every month.”

Investing in the Place Bedford Calls Home

That connection with the neighbourhood is also reflected in a new large-scale billboard erected by Bedford to celebrate Bedfordview following its recent centenary. Following Bedfordview’s recent centenary, the billboard is a celebration of the neighbourhood itself, reflecting Bedford’s love for the suburb and encouraging the wider community to take pride in the place they call home.

Through its partnership with Better Bedfordview, Bedford will continue supporting practical improvements that make a visible difference to the people who live, work, shop and spend time in the area.

Mariana van Zeller creates an online dating persona and becomes the target of a real romance scam investigation

Johannesburg, 1 October 2026: National Geographic has released the trailer and announced the premiere date for SUPER SCAM ME, an investigative documentary special featuring Emmy Award-winning journalist Mariana van Zeller. The one-hour production, produced by Muck Media and directed by Jeff Plunkett, is scheduled to air across Africa on Sunday, 18 October at 21:00 (CAT) on National Geographic (DStv 181, StarTimes 220). It will also be available to South African audiences on Disney+.

Romance scams are now one of the fastest-growing and most devastating forms of financial crime. The rise of generative AI, which is capable of convincingly imitating celebrities and public figures, is only making these scams more sophisticated and harder to spot. An estimated one in seven adults has lost money to this form of deception, and in 2025 alone, romance scammers stole more than $1 billion from American victims.

After years of reporting on the scam industry, Mariana enters one of her most immersive investigations to date in SUPER SCAM ME. In a real-life social experiment, she builds a new online dating persona and goes undercover as the target of a romance scam to understand and expose the tactics, technologies, and psychological manipulations these criminals utilize to deceive their victims.

What begins as an online investigation becomes an extraordinary real-world pursuit, as Mariana begins to focus on one scammer, posing as a four-star general, who is growing increasingly persistent and manipulative. She teams up with a white-hat cyber hacker to try to uncover her scammer’s true identity and location and sets out to confront him face-to-face.

Mariana also meets victims whose lives have been upended by romance scams, including a woman who was duped into believing she was in a relationship with Jon Bon Jovi. What she thought was a genuine connection left her facing foreclosure on her home, exposing the devastating real-world consequences of these crimes.

“I’ve spent years reporting on scams, and the reaction I hear most is ‘How could anyone be so stupid? That would never happen to me.’ But it can, and it does happen to anyone,” said van Zeller. “So this time, I made myself the target.”

In an innovative collaboration between National Geographic and Muck Media, Mariana’s podcast, “The Hidden Third,” will feature special episodes dedicated to SUPER SCAM ME, airing the week of 12 October. The episodes will include exclusive interviews with the white-hat cyber hacker and victim featured in the special.

As the host and executive producer of National Geographic’s Emmy-winning series “Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller,” Mariana has spent years investigating the world’s most dangerous underground economies, earning a record-setting 88 Emmy nominations and 16 wins.

Muck Media produces SUPER SCAM ME for National Geographic, with Jeff Plunkett and Mariana van Zeller credited as executive producers. Plunkett also directs the documentary, while Bengt Anderson serves as National Geographic’s executive producer.
