Thirteen Cape Flats schools will compete for R80,000 in prizes at the 24 October showcase, themed around the choices shaping young people’s futures.

Cape Town, 16 October 2026: Sometimes, moving forward means stopping, taking a different turn or finding the courage to change direction. This October, learners from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats will transform familiar street signs into symbols of life’s decisions, exploring the challenges they face and the paths they can choose for themselves.

Liberty Promenade’s annual Next Generation Musical Showcase will return on Saturday, 24 October 2026 for its 15th year, bringing learners together for a celebration of music, movement, storytelling and creative expression.

This year’s theme, En Route to Change, will challenge participating schools to use familiar street signs as inspiration for performances exploring the decisions young people face as they navigate school, friendships, family, personal growth and the digital world.

Turning Signs Into Stories

From stop signs and warnings to arrows pointing towards a new destination, learners will reimagine the signs around them as symbols of the different directions life can take.

Through music, poetry, storytelling and performance, groups of five to eight learners from each school will transform the stage into their own journey. Themes may include decision-making, resilience, responsibility, online behaviour, uncertainty and the freedom to change direction when the path ahead no longer feels right.

At the heart of the theme is a simple message: signs may point the way, but young people ultimately have a choice about the direction they take.

The creativity will also extend beyond the stage. Each school will create a street-sign-inspired installation reflecting its interpretation of choice, life experiences and safer online behaviour. These will be displayed at Liberty Promenade, giving the wider community an opportunity to engage with the learners’ messages.

Following the showcase, the creations will form part of a Community Choice exhibition, where shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite school performance and creation, while also standing a chance to win R10,000.

Young Voices, Big Ideas

Participating schools will compete for a share of R80,000 in cash prizes, up from R60,000 in 2025, which will support improvements and educational needs at the winning schools. For Liberty Promenade, however, the value of Next Generation also lies in giving young people an audience for what they have to say.

“Every year, these learners remind us just how much young people have to say when they are given the opportunity and the freedom to express it in their own way,” says Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade. “This year’s theme is particularly relevant because young people are making choices in a world that can be difficult and noisy. We want Next Generation to remind them that their voices matter, their choices matter and changing direction can sometimes be an important part of moving forward.”

The 13 participating schools are Beacon School for LSEN, Caradale Primary School, Cascade Primary School, Eastville Primary School, Eisleben Road Primary School, Jamaicaweg Primary School, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Mondale High School, Oval North High School, Portland High School, Rocklands High School, Spine Road High School and West End Primary School.

Liberty Promenade will host the Next Generation Musical Showcase in its Food District from 10:00 AM on Saturday, 24 October. Entry is free, but with limited seating available, guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Singularity SA 2025 Focuses on Emotional Intelligence, Innovation, and Adaptive Leadership for the Exponential Age

Johannesburg, 30 October 2025: The Singularity South Africa Summit 2025, hosted in collaboration with Old Mutual and metaverse partner UBU, concluded in Johannesburg last week after two days of keynote talks, focused debate and practical demonstrations. The final day brought a sharper emphasis on human biology, learning, urban design and social purpose, with speakers sharing concrete interventions for leaders, innovators and policy makers who have the opportunity to steer exponential technologies toward measurable social value.

Sleep as a Strategic Asset

Dr Michael Breus, known widely as “The Sleep Doctor,” framed sleep as a performance and public health lever, not a private luxury. He explained how sleep drive and circadian rhythm interact to determine restorative sleep, and outlined simple, evidence-based interventions that boost cognition and resilience. A practical example was the so-called napa latte, a short nap followed by a small dose of caffeine, which can reset alertness for a few hours, he said, cautioning that it is an occasional hack rather than a daily fix.

Breus stressed the glymphatic system’s role in clearing brain proteins during deep sleep, and noted that early detection of REM behaviour disorders can signal later neurodegenerative risk. He also described chronotypes and their implications for workplace scheduling, and presented a five-step plan that can lift sleep quality by 20 to 30 percent in three weeks. The message was clear: organisations that respect sleep biology can unlock productivity, creativity and long-term health.

Human-centred Innovation and Cognitive Health

Jeff Karp set out a bio-inspired approach to technology development, showing how lessons from nature can produce medical devices and platform spinouts that move from lab to market. His lab’s portfolio, including FDA-approved surgical glue and a nasal spray to reduce viral spread, illustrated how creativity rooted in biology produces commercial resilience.

Karp also urged deliberate pattern interruption to counteract attention economy harms, ranging from simple home rituals to reworked meeting cadences. Shorter meetings with built in pauses, sensory focus exercises and anti-convenience practices were positioned as scalable ways to sharpen perception and sustain innovation capacity.

Cities, Mobility and New Real Estate Models

Hongqi Guo addressed the scale of urban migration and the architectural response required. With hundreds of millions moving to cities, he argued for vertical, transit-oriented solutions that preserve land while creating mixed-use neighbourhoods. Some of the remarkable projects showcased included high-rise CBDs, new towns built around high-speed rail nodes, and a horizontal skyscraper concept that stacks life, work and leisure within a single structure.

Guo also shared modular vertiports to support eVTOL networks and plans to repurpose polluting industrial zones into semiconductor and research clusters. His work suggested cities can be shaped to host economic renewal and cultural life at the same time.

Adaptability, Leadership and the Future of Work

Futurist John Sanei delivered a powerful talk exploring IRL – The “in real life” imperative, unpacking how the way we can add value is shifting from IQ and hard skills to emotional intelligence and adaptability. He emphasised that in a world where AI surpasses average human cognitive capacity, the ability to manage emotions, navigate triggers, and remain adaptable is what will define success. Sanei highlighted meditation as a practical tool to calm the nervous system, increase brain fitness, and facilitate awareness shifts, allowing individuals to move from reactive high-beta brain states to more reflective alpha states. He urged leaders and workers alike to embrace emotional intelligence and self-awareness as essential assets for thriving in evolving environments.

Valter Adao, Chief Executive at Cadena Growth Partners, emphasised that digital transformation begins with leadership transformation. He argued that many organisations fall short not because of technology, but because leaders fail to adopt new ways of thinking. Adao called for a culture of continuous learning and experimentation, supported by digital literacy across all levels of business, to ensure sustainable innovation rather than reactionary change.

Dr Mark Nasila, Chief Data and AI Officer at First National Bank, grounded the discussion in the practical realities of artificial intelligence. He cautioned that successful AI integration depends on clear governance, ethical oversight, and a focus on augmenting rather than replacing human potential. Nasila illustrated how human-centred design and adaptive policymaking can help organisations use AI responsibly to improve decision-making and drive long-term value.

Innovation For Social Impact

The summit ended on a powerful note with Bohlale Mphahlele from Limpopo, whose Alerting Earpiece has the potential to revolutionise society’s response to gender based violence. The discreet wearable device can send distress alerts, GPS location and audio evidence to trusted contacts and authorities when a person feels threatened.

Her presentation translated the conference’s themes into a tangible effort to protect women and children, and highlighted how AI, IoT and blockchain can support safety, evidence integrity and rapid response. Her presence further highlighted the summit’s call to prioritise innovations that address real suffering and restore dignity.

Moving Forward

As the 2025 summit drew to a close, delegates left with a set of practical action items: align work schedules with biological rhythms where possible, embed pauses and sensory practices into daily routines, pursue nature-informed design in product development, invest in board-level digital fluency and reskill across all layers of organisations, and scale empathetic technologies that tackle pressing social problems.

Co-CEOs Mic Mann and Shayne Mann thanked delegates, partners and speakers for their engagement and announced that the 2026 Singularity South Africa Summit will take place on Wednesday, 21 and Thursday, 22 October at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Experience the Human Edge With Creativity, Culture, and Innovative Perspectives

Johannesburg, 1 October 2025: The Singularity South Africa Summit 2025 returns to the Sandton Convention Centre on 22 and 23 October, as Africa’s top tech and innovation summit presented in collaboration with Old Mutual and metaverse partner UBU. With more than 46 global and local thought leaders across two days, the programme is jam-packed with insights and inspiration, together with an immersive exhibition and unlimited networking opportunities.

One of the world’s most sought-after speakers, David Roberts, will set the tone for the summit with his much-anticipated opening and closing addresses. From disruption and leadership to the human quest to end suffering, Roberts will frame the urgency of exponential change and set the tone for two days of transformation.

For the future change makers attending the summit this year, here are seven keynotes you don’t want to miss:

Shaping the Future of Work with AI

Anita Schjøll Abildgaard, Co-Founder and CEO of Iris.ai, will tackle the question on every leader’s mind: what does an AI-first workplace really look like? Drawing on her global experience as an ethical AI pioneer, Anita will reveal how aligning culture, skills and strategy with advanced AI systems creates productivity and resilience while keeping responsibility at the centre.

Maureen Costello, Google Cloud Vice President for the UK, Ireland and Sub-Saharan Africa, will also delve into the future of AI at work. Her talk entitled “The future is faster than you think, why your business needs to bet on AI now” will share a visionary look at how these foundational technologies are not just theoretical concepts, but practical tools that are reshaping industries and creating new opportunities, right now.

Technology, Intention and Human Potential

Peter Xing, Data and AI Specialist at Microsoft and Co-Founder of Transhumanism Australia, will confront the big question of preparing for superintelligence. His session, Post-AGI Planning, offers a roadmap for how society can navigate the rise of artificial general intelligence while safeguarding ethical progress.

Dr Jeff Karp, biomedical engineer, entrepreneur and author, will explore the power of intention. Known for turning complex science into everyday tools, Jeff will demonstrate how focusing intention can drive attention, creativity and purposeful action. He will also join Singularity Co-CEO Shayne Mann in a discussion on the future of invention and human performance and his process on how to solve the impossible and invent new products that help humanity thrive.

Culture, Creativity and the Human Edge

Futurist and bestselling author John Sanei will challenge delegates to look beyond the digital noise in his keynote, The IRL (in real life) Imperative. He argues that in our era, while machines accelerate societal progress, real-life experiences and qualities are where the true value in life lies.

South African poet and performer Lebo Mashile brings cultural depth to the stage with an exploration of souls versus machines. As summit host, her artistry will thread through the programme, adding a distinctly local voice to a global conversation.

Finally, sleep specialist Dr Michael Breus will ensure delegates leave with longevity insights they can apply immediately. His talk, “How to be Better in Bed”, is a light-hearted yet science-driven exploration of how sleep cycles shape productivity, creativity and even personal relationships.

This is just a taste of what to expect; there are so many incredible thought leaders who will stretch your mind and prepare you for the future so that together, we can lead this wave of technological transformation and help future-proof Africa.

“The Singularity Summit is about more than innovation; it’s about shaping the future we believe in. Real transformation doesn’t come from hype, but from meaningful action. When you lead with purpose and put people at the heart of technology, you build a legacy that lasts. This has been Old Mutual’s legacy for 180 years, showing up, especially in uncertain times. The Summit is part of our commitment to investing in a future where performance, purpose, and people move together,” shared Celiwe Ross, Group Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Old Mutual.

“With some of the world’s top speakers on the stage, the summit helps leaders upgrade their mindset, skillset and network so they can apply this in their organizations and businesses right away. We are honoured and grateful to bring cutting-edge thinking to the continent at a time when South Africa needs strong leadership and direction” said Mic Mann, Co-CEO of Singularity South Africa.

“Additional to the exponential learning, a significant additional benefit is the return on investment generated by spending time with the in room-leaders from top organisations and bold startups colliding, forming partnerships, and turning ideas into action.” added Shayne Mann, Co-CEO of Singularity South Africa.

How to attend

Delegates attending the summit will gain access to two days of keynotes, workshops, networking and live robotics demonstrations, along with entry to UBU’s metaverse platform and a digital certificate of completion. With a global community dedicated to solving humanity’s grand challenges, the Singularity South Africa Summit equips leaders to thrive in a world of accelerating change. Delegates will leave with the tools, connections and perspective to drive impact in their industries and communities.

Tshwane, 9 July 2025: Menlyn Park is once again setting the stage for one of Pretoria’s most talked-about wedding events. Selected Menlyn stores will also showcase on-trend offerings, with popular stores like Dis-Chem activating special touchpoints around the centre.

For those looking to immerse themselves in this world of tulle, tuxedos and table settings, Menlyn’s vibrant Wedding Trend Pods will be back for two weeks. Each pod will bring to life a different wedding theme, complete with dresses, suits, floral arrangements and decor details that make each one pop. They’re not just photogenic – they’re pure aisle-style inspiration.

Fashion, flair and fabulous giveaways

One of the weekend’s highlights will be the Menlyn Sky Fashion Experience. Across the two main days of the expo (Saturday and Sunday), visitors can enjoy a series of curated runway shows featuring looks for brides, grooms, bridesmaids, flower girls and mothers of the bride. Whether you’re looking for sleek sophistication or full-on fantasy, the catwalks will deliver.

The “Say I Do” Expo is free to attend, but for those wanting the full experience, shoppers looking to take their planning up a notch can register for the VIP Package at R150. This gives you entry into a range of premium competitions, including the chance to win either a traditional or white wedding valued at over R200,000 each. Several vendors are also offering giveaways of their wedding goods and services, making the VIP registration well worth it for those hoping to walk away with more than memories and inspiration.

Live entertainment will fill the air as popular live musicians, many of whom offer their services for weddings, take to performance spots across the centre throughout the weekend. It’s a showcase with vibe and harmony.

More than just window shopping

Menlyn is also introducing the “Rent a Hanger” concept for brides looking to pass on the love. A dedicated store will be set up where women can sell their pre-loved gowns. Mannequins displayed in the common area will show off some of these once-worn wonders, giving new brides the chance to find their dream dress with a little extra story behind it.

Wedding masterclasses will complete the experience, with expert-led sessions covering topics from nutrition and skincare to the legal elements of tying the knot. Whether you’re at the Pinterest stage or finalising your guest list, there’ll be guidance, tips and plenty of food for thought.

Singularity Summit highlights technology and learning this Youth Month

Johannesburg, 26 June 2025: As South Africa marks Youth Month, Singularity South Africa has announced a renewed focus on the future of education and the potential of artificial intelligence to propel youth learning, at this year’s summit. Taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre on 22 and 23 October 2025, the event will examine how exponential technologies, AI and robotics can accelerate the education landscape and equip Africa’s youth for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Presented in collaboration with headline sponsor Old Mutual and metaverse partner UBU, the SingularityU South Africa Summit 2025 will bring global thinkers and African innovators together under the theme Igniting Africa’s Future. With nearly 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, the need to harness innovation in education has never been more urgent.

Equipping a Generation for What’s Next

The 2025 programme will explore how AI can support scalable, inclusive and locally relevant education solutions across the continent. From adaptive learning platforms and AI tutors to data-driven education policies, the summit will unpack what it takes to future-proof African societies from the classroom upwards. Additionally, the summit will showcase robotics with demonstrations, giving delegates a first look at the impressive potential of this groundbreaking technology.

World-renowned speakers will also address how today’s learners can become tomorrow’s problem-solvers and how exponential technologies can unlock new career paths in the rapidly changing economy. Topics will range from digital literacy, the metaverse environment and lifelong learning to the ethical use of AI in schools and tertiary education institutions.

As with previous years, the in-person event will include two stages, immersive workshops, a curated expo and networking opportunities. The metaverse experience, hosted within UBU, will mirror the physical event with additional gamified and interactive features.

Driving Purpose-Driven Innovation

“This year’s summit comes at a critical moment for Africa as South Africa hosts the G20 Summit,” said Shayne Mann, co-CEO of Singularity South Africa. “We are seeing exponential technologies rapidly reshape how we learn, work and live. This is about building relevant, scalable solutions that allow Africa’s youth to not just participate in the future, but help shape it.”

“Old Mutual is proud to be associated with an event that puts innovation and education at the heart of the conversation,” said Celiwe Ross, Director: Strategy, Sustainability, People & Public Affairs at Old Mutual. “We know that empowering youth through meaningful technology is one of the most effective ways to build resilience, drive opportunity and create long-term prosperity across the continent.”

“As the pace of change accelerates, we are proud to provide a platform that supports big ideas and practical solutions for the critical younger generation,” added Mic Mann, co-CEO. “This year’s focus on education and AI goes to the core of what this summit is about, driving progress through collaboration and insight.”

2026 dates announced — Johannesburg and Cape Town to host ULTRA South Africa once again

ULTRA South Africa has officially cemented its status as a cornerstone of the nation’s music calendar, celebrating a decade of euphoric dance music this past weekend with sold-out shows in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. The anniversary event was nothing short of electric — a full-circle moment for fans, artists, and organisers alike.

The two-city showcase launched on Friday, May 9 at The Ostrich in Cape Town, before culminating in a high-octane finale at Expo Centre, Nasrec in Johannesburg on Saturday, May 10. Venues brimmed with energy from early afternoon until the final drop at 2 a.m.

World-Class Headliners And A Surprise-Studded Line-Up

Martin Garrix headlined both cities with a career-spanning set, capping off the Johannesburg event with a surprise appearance by Lauv and Lloyiso, creating an unforgettable moment for fans.

The iconic Armin van Buuren delivered an emphatic performance, balancing timeless anthems with fresh tracks. Making his South African debut, ISOxo shook the stages with his genre-bending sound, while KSHMR ignited a cultural moment with local remixes of classics like Jerusalema and Nkalakatha.

RESISTANCE And Amapiano Take Centre Stage

The RESISTANCE stage brought deeper, darker electronic sounds to life.
