Cape Town Scandal: Malusi Booi Released on R250k Bail in R1bn Tender Fraud Case
Former City of Cape Town MMC Malusi Booi, embroiled in a scandal involving R1 billion in housing tenders, has secured bail of R250,000 after appearing in court in Cape Town. Booi, aged 47, was apprehended in the Eastern Cape and faced charges related to fraudulent activities in the awarding of significant municipal contracts.
During the bail hearing, Booi initially requested bail set at R5,000, countered by the state’s recommendation of R200,000. Magistrate Alida Theart decided on the higher amount, stipulating stringent conditions, including a ban on contacting witnesses and travel restrictions outside the Eastern Cape without prior notification to authorities. Booi is also prohibited from leaving South Africa until the conclusion of the trial.
The court also granted bail to other defendants, including Abdul Kader and the Mullins’, each at R250,000, while others received varying bail amounts. The proceedings were adjourned until October 16 for ongoing investigations and the potential inclusion of alleged crime figure Ralph Stanfield and his spouse Nicole Johnson in the case.
Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), expressed contentment with the bail terms and revealed plans for further expansions of the case. Charges against the accused encompass violations under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), alongside allegations of money laundering and fraud, with additional charges under consideration.
