Bedfordview Community Unites For Cancer Awareness At Bedford Centre

Bedfordview Residents Join “Your Cancer Counts” to Honour Cancer Patients, Survivors, and Loved Ones at Bedford Centre
Johannesburg, 19 June 2025: The Bedfordview community came together in heartfelt solidarity for the “Your Cancer Counts” campaign at Bedford Centre earlier this month, standing in recognition of those whose lives have been touched by cancer.
Residents of Bedfordview and nearby suburbs stepped forward in a remarkable show of support for the “Your Cancer Counts” campaign, an initiative hosted at Bedford Centre and driven by Living with Cancer SA. The campaign is part of a national awareness effort in the lead-up to National Cancer Survivors Day to raise awareness, honour survivors, and remember those lost to cancer.
A striking tribute installation stood opposite Elegance Jewellers and Spur: a giant ribbon-shaped sculpture filled with colourful balls, each inscribed with the name of someone affected by cancer. Shoppers were invited to write names, share memories, and reflect on personal journeys, creating a visually moving and collective tribute within the centre.
Volunteers were on hand throughout the activation to engage with visitors, provide resources, and encourage participation in South Africa’s first patient-led cancer registry. This pioneering registry seeks to give patients and families a voice, ensuring their experiences are counted in research, advocacy, and future support services.
Attendees also accessed vital information around early detection, support networks, and the importance of open conversations about diagnosis and survivorship. Many visitors lingered to share personal stories and messages of hope.
“This campaign reminded us that so many people in our community are affected by Cancer. Whether they’ve survived, lost someone or are currently facing a diagnosis, everyone deserves to feel seen,” said Linda Linnow, Centre Manager at Bedford Centre. “We are grateful to those who came out to support the campaign and help build something truly meaningful, one name at a time.”
The Living with Cancer SA initiative was held in collaboration with the National Cancer Registry and several leading cancer advocacy groups.
